Barn Door FAQ

How do I choose the width dimensions of the door?

The width of the barn door should be based on the size of the door opening and should have at least a 2” overlap on each side to ensure privacy and proper operation. For cased openings, it is visually appealing for the door to cover all the casing when closed. Doors provided by Industrial Brands will list the recommended opening sizes on the product page of the website. Tin-clad fire door systems are designed specifically for the intended door opening, with specifications listed on the product page.

How do I determine the height of the door?

The height of a barn door depends on the size of the door opening and the style of door casing. To avoid interference with the casing, we recommend that the door height meets or exceeds the top edge of the casing in its installed position. Tin-clad fire door systems are designed specifically for the intended opening, with details provided on the product page.

What door thickness can I use?

Our standard residential systems accommodate door thicknesses ranging from 1-3/8” to 1-3/4”. Choosing a thinner door may result in a larger gap between the back of the door and the casing.

How do I determine which guide to use?

Door guides are included with the hardware assemblies and specified on the product page of the website. Additional options are also available for purchase separately.

What are the dimensions of the guide slot cut at the bottom of the door?

Please refer to the installation instructions for the specific product for detailed milling instructions, if applicable.

How long should my track be?

We offer track lengths designed to accommodate various opening sizes. The minimum track length is 2 times the width of the finished opening plus 6 inches. If the wall condition requires a shorter track, it can be cut to the appropriate length, and the wall mounts can be adjusted as needed. Fire door systems are designed specifically for the intended opening, with specifications listed on the product page.

How much clearance do I need for my hardware?

Clearances vary depending on the style of hardware selected. Please refer to the specific product page for detailed dimensions.

What is the weight rating for my hardware?

The weight rating depends on the hardware style. Industrial Brands offers systems that can accommodate doors weighing up to 1500 lbs. Please refer to the product page for specific weight ratings.

When would I need additional hangers?

All Industrial Brands hardware systems are engineered for the weight listed on the specific product page. Doors wider than 48” may require additional hangers to prevent sagging. Additional hangers can be purchased separately.

What type of support is required for the track?

We recommend continuous solid wood backing within the wall, at least 1-1/2” thick, to securely mount the door system. Thin steel strap backing is not compatible with the provided hardware and should be avoided.

Can I use a wall-mounted header instead of in-wall backing?

Yes, an external wall-mounted header can be used in place of in-wall wood backing for doors weighing less than 125 lbs. When properly installed, this can provide adequate support, distributing the weight of the system and preventing damage to the drywall for large or heavy doors.

Can I use wall anchors instead of in-wall backing or an external header?

Hollow wall anchors must not be used to secure the track system to the wall, as they create a dangerous condition and will void your warranty.

What if there is not enough clearance between the back of the door and the casing?

Wall mount spacers can be placed between the wall mount and the wall to increase clearance at the back of the door. These spacers are available for purchase separately and can be found on the product page.

Can I order a color sample?

Yes, color samples are available for purchase on our website.

Are your barn door hardware products suitable for outdoor use?

Yes, all included hardware is weather-resistant and will develop a natural patina over time.
